Kuiper belt – supposed source of short period comets – was recently found to have only 4 percent of the necessary objects!  (Science 5 Sept. 2003 vol. 301 page 1304 “Comet 'Factory' Found to Have
Too Little Inventory”) Comets must have been recently produced, then, by some kind of a catastrophe.
